Steve Webb

Steve Webb turned a small idea of managing the gig poster business into one of Victoria’s most successful printing companies.   Webb started out working as a promoter but was unhappy with the city’s way of publizing events. He saw an opportunity and turned it into a lucrative business. When Webb was working as a promoter he saw the need for a regulated system to control the posting of event posters.   “It occurred to me that people were wasting their money and time” says Webb. He approached the city and the clubs in Victoria with a proposal to give him the contracts for their posters in return for managing their circulation. He would put up posters and ensure equal representation for all. It was a perfect solution. The city loved the idea and he was able to obtain contracts with every club in the city. “For the first four years of Metropol I just walked around myself with the poster bag and hung up posters” Eventually   , someone asked him why he wasn’t just making the pos

The Dissemination of Information in the Renaissance and its Effects

The Renaissance marks a period in time when a major shift occurred in the way humans think. Before then, human thought was much more concerned with outside factors such as religion and tradition rather than individual and self-conscious thought. As this shift occurred, humans started to focus more inward where every individual was capable of conscious thought outside of cultural practices. Part of this change was caused by the invention of mechanized print, and the dissemination of knowledge that followed the invention of mechanized print. Furthermore, this explosion of knowledge in the Renaissance has many similarities to the explosion of information in the current digital age. The systems of organization of information set forth by the scholars of the Renaissance created a precedent for the structure of the modern computer, and how the individual comprehended and synthesized its information. To understand the effects of the movement of humanism in the Renaissance, it is import

Drug Decriminalization

In 2016, 2,205,300 people were incarcerated for drug possession in the US alone. This is the highest incarceration rate in the world. This number shows the alarming rates at which individuals are getting punished for drug use. The incarceration of drug users only exacerbates and contributes to drug abuse in individuals, whereas decriminalization would offer alternative solutions to those struggling with substance issues. Countries such as Portugal have already decriminalized drug possession and are seeing positive results in lowering numbers of drug related deaths and better prevention of HIV. As opposed to what many may think, “There is essentially no relationship between the punitiveness of a country’s drug laws and its rates of drug use.” Says drug reform think tank Transform . The US spends $47+ million on the drug war every year. Furthermore, there is a significant body of evidence that shows enforcement of drug charges has little deterrence on drug use.  These effort

Tuition is major concern among current students in BC. As tuition prices steadily rise across Canada, students are looking at higher levels of debt. Free tuition is good because it allows people from all financial backgrounds and abilities to access further education and develop skills which help to close the gap between the have and the have-nots; it frees the student of debt which hinders past students from reaching future milestones in life. Tuition prices have been rising steadily including a 2.0% increase in BC over the last academic year. Furthermore, nationally,  additional costs such us compulsory fees for undergraduates are “ on average, $921 in 2018/2019, up 4.2% from the previous year ”. This growth in tuition fees has been consistent for the last nine years, and for many families th
